Tam O Shanter Jug. This jug is the earliest to bear a date mark from the w.ridgway & co pottery, The scenes are based from a poem by Robert Burns (1759-96). On one side we see tam passing the evening of market day however, the minutes wing their way with pleasure and with the clock on the wall approaching midnight, Tam has to make his way home unfortunately in his befuddled state, he stumbles across a coven of warlocks and witches and is forced to flee, chased by the witches he heads for the river, since they dare not cross running water, but before his grey mare Maggie reaches the keystone of the bridge, the Carlin cought her by the rump and left poor Maggie scarce a stump. The other side of the jug ,shows the chase with one of the witches clinging on to the horses tail just as tam reaches the bridge, the hand of the witch clutching the tail. the jug is buff colour with smear glaze, inside of the jug glazed, no damage a few firing cracks made at the time of firing in kiln. £ 15.00
